The connectedness of all of us

With Thanksgiving looming so close, I am both tenderly and painfully aware of those loved ones who are not at my table. Some because they live far away, some because they have passed on and some because of old hurts that have not yet mended. Recently I came upon a meditation which honors the connectedness we have to all human beings. This week, I am guiding this meditation during shavasana in all of my classes. It could also be done in comfortable seated pose.

I offer this meditation to all of us who desire to honor their relationships-past, present and future.

"The breath connects us to all those who have come before us, all those who share this planet with us in this moment, and all those who will come after us. Use the simple act of breathing to remind yourself of this connection.

Bring to mind a person who is nearby, physically. Someone who is sharing this very room, or home, with you. As you inhale, take in their physical presence. As you exhale, send them awareness and appreciation.

Bring to mind a person who is close to your heart, but far from you. As you inhale, bring them to mind. As you exhale, send them love and support.

Bring to mind a person who is suffering. As you inhale, breathe in awareness of their suffering, and as you exhale, send them compassion and understanding.

Bring to mind an ancestor, a predecessor-someone whose very life has made your present experience possible. As you inhale, take in the meaning of their life, and as you exhale, send them gratitude.

Bring to mind all those who will come after you. As you inhale, experience the beauty of your own life. As you exhale, send them the fruits of your life, and hope for the future. "

Namaste.

Dear Anne,

It's ironic that you wrote this blog about the connectedness of all of us.

I wanted to come by your house this morning, and wish you and Matt a Happy Thanksgiving, but felt like I really am not part of your connection...for whatever dysfunctional reason that may be.

I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry that I couldn't be flexible enough to let Dawn grow with you and still remain by her side. I still miss her, and there is still pain within me in regards to why she and I grew apart. I have to come to the conclusion that for whatever the reason, it was just not meant to be. I felt like I connected so well with her, and that when she found Samadhi, she lost me as her root. She didn't need me any more, because she had you guys. That's what really hurt me, and I simply felt used and not loved.

I realize now that she needed to grow on her own, and not have me dragging her down in her growth process. I'm sorry that I was only there to not be of help to her, and I'm also sorry that I couldn't have been more help in her desires for growth. I took it all too personally, but I'm sure there are psychological reasonings why and how things took place, which I'll never really know why.

I'm still alone, and feel alone after her leaving, and wanted to tell you that I would like you to pass on a hug from me to her, but you don't even need to mention my name. Just tell her that an old friend forgives her for whatever guilt she may feel for leaving me, and that he's sorry that she had to be the strong one in leaving.

Oh, I guess that's it, and what more could I possibly say?

Just trying to pass on the love, and the healing the best way I know how, with open communication. Please let her know that she is sorely missed, even though I realize about three years have passed.

Thank you,

John Hinchliffe
